Data Entry

The Graphic model screen is opened with the Grid for entry of number of blows on the left and the Stratigraphy control grid below the actual graphic sheet.

In the entry grid, enter the number of blows for each depth interval in the sequence they were noted. See below for entry from external table i.e. Excel. The program performs the necessary computation and draws the graphic of blows and dynamic resistance. The user can specify the soil layer boundaries (discontinuities) on the basis of the bar chart produced interactively as the blows count is entered.

Layer depth

The depth may be entered graphically with the mouse.

Place the pointer on the graphic model. open the floating menu (right mouse click) and select Insert layer. As the mouse is moved up and down a box along the elevation ruler indicates depth. When you click at a depth to indicate the boundary of the layer, a dialog box appears with the resulting layer depth. Click on OK to accept this (or alter it at will) and cause the figure to be entered in the Stratigraphy table.

As this is altered the Stratigraphy column on the model sheet is also updated. You can continue in this way to define more layers. When terminated open the floating menu again and click Insert Layer again to switch off the function.

To remove a layer boundary, operate in the Stratigraphy table below. Select the row in the table and press Del. (not all the row need be selected).

Note that the result is that the layer below the deleted one now comes to include the one that was above the boundary line which may or may not be the intention.

Layer Nspt

Value is calculated based on the (see Statistic compute) selected statistical model.

Gamma

Enter the assumed unit weight. This can also be calculated on the base of the cohesion assigned in the next columns. To cause this to be done open the floating menu in this column and activate the item (Automatic gamma calculation). Thereafter as soon as a choice is made the gamma is entered automatically.

Cohesive / Cohesionless

Select either or even both by clicking the check box.

Texture

Drag to the cell the texture required from the list on the right, to apply it to this layer. If instead a clear colour is required click on the cell to open a colour palette from which this may be selected. The source of the texture bitmaps is in the folder: Retini, within the Programs/Geostru folder.

Description

Enter a text to describe the layer.

Notes

Computation of coefficient of probe reduction: This output represents a reduction coefficient that takes account of the loss of energy due to rod shudder conditioned as it is by the number of blows and the depth and having a direct influence on dynamic resistance to failure and Herminier load data.

Dynamic resistance: Dynamic resistance of the penetrometer at layer interface (with or without shudder reduction effect) calculated according to the well-known Olandesi indications.

The determination of type of soil in the layers and assignment of geotechnical parameters in the stratigraphy table can be made automatically after determining layer boundaries and defining as cohesive or cohesionless, by selecting the “Lithology auto assign” switch in the general data menu. The source of the assignments are carried in a table available to the program.

Excel or any tabular form in which the blow readings may have been recorded, can be the source for a copy and paste directly into the ‘blows’ column of the data entry pane without the need for manual re-entry. Ensure that the column has been selected before the paste is effected as otherwise the data will be pasted on other fields.
